Inala (4077) is a post-war residential suburb in Brisbane's southwest, developed rapidly from the late 1940s through the 1960s as a government housing estate to accommodate the city's expanding population. The housing stock is almost exclusively low-set brick and fibro homes from that era. A construction type that carries specific painting challenges. Fibrous cement (fibro) sheeting was the standard cladding material on many Inala homes built before 1985, and sheets of this age have a high likelihood of containing chrysotile asbestos. Any painting work involving sanding, cutting, or surface disruption to fibro cladding in Inala requires an asbestos assessment before work begins. Intact fibro that is in sound condition can be painted over safely, but the preparation protocol is non-negotiable.
